Rich’s Letter to Goodyear Employees

(Akron/Tire Review) Here is the complete text of a letter from Goodyear North American Tire President Jon Rich to all Goodyear employees. The letter was delivered to employees last week.

"The United Steelworkers (USW) union yesterday rejected our final contract proposal and declared a strike at our 12 U.S. master plants and 4 facilities in Canada. Negotiations stalled after the union’s proposals did not include key items found in their agreements with competitors.

"Since June, the bargaining teams have been trying to reach an agreement. We put together a fair offer to the USW that balances the needs of all concerned: the company, our associates and our retirees, as well as our customers and shareholders. We have worked hard for a contract that is fair to all stakeholders and enhances Goodyear’s competitiveness and ability to win with customers in today’s intense global market place.

"During a negotiation, both parties will position their proposals as "what’s best" for their side. We will not negotiate in public, but all associates – hourlies and salaried – owe it to themselves to be informed. Talk to your managers or union leaders to find out what the real issues are and understand what is at stake for you and the company. This is critical.

"We hoped this day would not come, but we have prepared for it. We have plans in place to continue operating our facilities and serving our customers. We have all worked very hard over the last few years to regain the trust of our customers, and we have to make sure we don’t let them down.

"As we go forward, we plan to continue bargaining with the Steelworkers. We remain hopeful that we will arrive at a resolution. But I assure everyone that we will not agree to a contract that puts us at a disadvantage versus our competitors. I have no problem battling the competition in the marketplace. That’s how it should be. But the marketplace must be a level playing field.

"The stakes are high for all of us and we must pull together. Though this bargain is between us and the Steelworkers, it has much greater consequences. We’re fighting to preserve the future of the last major American tire manufacturer. We will not sit idly by and allow foreign competition to gain the upper hand. We cannot allow the foundation of our republic’s free enterprise system – American manufacturing – to erode further. That’s worth fighting for.

"I urge all associates to maintain a fair and balanced view during this difficult time. Remember that the Steelworkers who build our products are Goodyear associates, and when we reach an agreement, they’ll be back making our great products again.

"Most importantly, keep our customers in mind. They are the only ones that can provide us with job security.

"We will continue to update you frequently throughout this process.

Stay safe,
Jon"
