Plane Crashes into Ecuador Tire Plant

(Akron/Tire Review) On Mar. 24, a plane carrying 14 people crashed into the side of the Llantas General tire plant, located in Cuenca, Ecuador, killing five aboard and injuring nine.

The plant is partially owned by Continental AG.

The aircraft reportedly was carrying 12 passengers and two crewmembers from Cuenca to Macas in Ecuador’s southeastern jungle. The Associated Press reported that nine survivors had been taken to local hospitals “in stable condition,” including one passenger, the pilot and co-pilot who were rescued after being trapped in the wreckage for more than four hours.

Witnesses reported that factory workers were having lunch in another area of the plant when the plane hit, so none were injured.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
