Pirelli has extended its Cyber Tyre technology to the commercial vehicle sector through the introduction of Cyber Fleet, an ‘intelligent’ tire that uses an electronic sensor and computer system to provide drivers and fleet managers with up-to-the-minute data regarding the tire’s condition and the vehicle’s geographical position.
The new product was unveiled at the manufacturer’s recent Truck Safety Day in Italy.
The Cyber Fleet system is designed to provide continuous tire monitoring so that irregularities can be quickly detected and proper maintenance ensures. Pirelli notes that in addition to the obvious handling and braking advantages offered by properly maintained tires operating at the correct pressure, the use of an ‘intelligent’ tire guarantees lower running costs by cutting fuel consumption and extending tire lifespan.
Pirelli Research & Development developed the technology in partnership with Schrader Electronics. The TMS (tire-mounted sensor) is fitted to the inside of the tire and collects all data regarding the tire pressure, temperature and identification. The system transmits the data gathered by the sensor simultaneously to the driver and fleet manager. Testing of Cyber Fleet by European and South American fleets begins in February 2012 and Pirelli anticipates the system will be ready for a September market launch. (Tyres & Accessories)
