Panic in Detroit? No, Just Forward-Thinking

Wanna know how Detroit’s auto industry ended up where it is today?

Troubled Chrysler announced that it was ending production of its hybrid Durango and Aspen lines. A hybrid Durango??? What did that get, maybe 3 mpg?

Equally cash strapped GM has decided the best way to save money is to….cut product development!!! This move includes its highly touted, company savior Volt electric car and anything on thje drawing table for 2010 or 2011 intro. Gee, guess we’ll just have to live with the all-new 2010 Mailbu!

Over in Dearborn, Ford is looking to unload its Volvo division to BMW. Which would be a great deal for BMW and would leave Ford with no top-line marques. Just like the good old days.

There is still a lot of idle chatter about some GM-Chrysler tie-up, but many experts now say such a marriage – in any form – would be doomed. As you can see, from the above, it doesn’t take a lot of smarts to run any of these companies now.
