The Ministry is encouraging drivers to focus on careful driving, with or without the tires, by adjusting their speed to match driving conditions.
Although the tires are thought to prevent accidents in inclement weather, some groups say legislating them would cause safety and environmental concerns in Ontario. The Canadian Automobile Association has expressed concern that drivers will incorrectly assume that with snow tires on their vehicle, they can drive like they do in the summer months. Also, the Toronto Environmental Alliance said snow tires reduce fuel economy because of increased traction.
Drivers in Quebec must now have snow tires on their cars by Nov. 15, 2008 and keep them on through April 15, or face fines of up to $300. (Tire Review/Akron)
