During its Movin’ On event in Montreal, Groupe Michelin unveiled its new concept tire – Vision. According to Michelin the concept tire is airless, connected, rechargeable, customizable, and organic.
Michelin said the goal was to create a tire that “represents the mobility of the future as well as being both sustainable and intelligent.” The Michelin Corporate Innovation Board (CIB) launched the project in the fall of 2016.
The materials used in the tire are both bio-sourced and biodegradable, minimizing the tire’s environmental footprint. The tire is also 3-D printed and rechargeable according to its level of wear and mobility needs. Because the tire is 3-D printed, it is possible to use precise amounts of rubber on the tire and extend its life depending on needs, Michelin said. The tread design is optimized and its depth is reduced in order to reduce its thickness and make materials usage more efficient.
The airless tire is made possible by the alveolar interior architecture that supports the vehicle, ensuring the solidity of the wheel.
A smart tire, Vision is equipped with sensors that provide real time information about the tire’s condition.
