The TMPS uses Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) technology and works by sending an acoustic wave through a tyre, monitoring pressure and temperature many times a second. The acoustic wave can detect deviations from the manufacturer’s recommendations and notify the driver when a problem arises. It has been estimated that fitting the SAW system to a vehicle can improve a vehicle’s fuel efficiency by ten per cent.
According to Transense, Honeywell is using the SAW technology to develop a new pressure and temperature sensor for use by Michelin.
