Michelin Part of Ex-Tire Plant Cleanup Plans in Detroit

Michelin North America is helping to clean up the site of a former Uniroyal tire plant along the Detroit River.

Michelin North America is among the corporations paying a total of $20 million to clean up the site of a former Uniroyal tire plant along the Detroit River, a move city officials say is vital to the redevelopment of that area.

The former tire plant is long gone, having been torn down some 25 years ago, but the site remained contaminated from chemicals and waste from decades of production there. MNA inherited the plant when it bought Uniroyal-Goodrich Tire Co. in May 1990.

Michigan Consolidated Gas Co., a subsidiary of DTE Energy, and DuPont also had facilities along the river and adjacent to the Uniroyal plant. All told, the clean-up will cover a 43-acrea piece of land.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing hailed the news as key to opening up some of the city’s "most valuable real estate."

Detroit native and former NFL star Jerome Bettis, who is involved in development plans for the land, said, "This was an eyesore for so many years. We feel this can be a flagship site and attract interest from all over the country."

Bettis and his team was awarded the redevelopment project some seven years ago. The project, which includes housing and commercial development, was on hold while the city negotiated the cleanup.

The Uniroyal tire plant in Detroit operated from 1906 until it closed in 1980. The city purchased the property from Michelin for $1 in 1991. Negotiations are ongoing with Michelin to pay for the rest of the remediation efforts, which will take 18 months, according to the Detroit News.
