Michelin Building New Tread Plant in Mexico

(Akron/Tire Review) Michelin North America (MNA) is building a new retread rubber pressing plant in Queretaro, Mexico, adjacent to the company’s Mexico headquarters and passenger tire plant.

MNA said the new plant was needed to meet “growing demand” for its Michelin Retread Technologies products.

Construction has already begun on the plant, which will employ 120 people, with production slated to begin next spring.

“Demand for Michelin retreads in North America is exploding,” said Luc Minguet, COO of Michelin Americas Truck Tires. “Demand is growing by half a million treads a year, and our franchisees plan to open 15 retreading plants this year. This new tread pressing facility is key to support our growth in North America.”

Currently, MNA produces tread stock at its Covington, Ga., tread pressing plant, which is completing an expansion that will double its capacity.
