A Fontana, Calif., tire dealership suffered relatively minor damage in a spectacular May 19 blaze that destroyed a neighboring pallet yard.
Witnesses said the flames reached more than 80 feet into the night sky, and some 60 fire units responded to the massive 10-acre fire that burned three commercial buildings and sent one firefighter to the hospital.
The five-alarm fire that broke out about 6 p.m. on May 19. “This is probably one of the largest fires in a commercial structure in our county in quite some time,” San Bernardino County Fire spokesman Otto Schramm told local media. Initial estimates put the damage at around $2.5 million.
Next door to the pallet yard was commercial truck tire dealer Tire Centers Inc., which lost a small steel warehouse and some tires in the fire, but its main truck tire center and offices were spared from worse.
"There’s significant damage but nothing we can’t overcome," Tire Centers manager Rick Wheeler told local media. "Tomorrow, we’ll be open as usual."
