Illinois Dealer Mixes Up Product Mix

Tires, lube, luxury purses. Yes, it’s a product mix that works, at least for Illinois dealer Waukegan Tire.

Waukegan Tire, a 2010 Tire Review Top Shop Award finalist, has become an official seller of luxury handbags produced by Passchal using recycled ag tire inner tubes. The bags have been featured on the Today Show, the Tony Awards and in Rolling Stone magazine.

Julie Serritella, who handles marketing for Waukegan Tire, told the local paper that the dealership decided to offer the unique product line to appeal more to women customers.

“We were made aware of custom luxury designer bags which recycle inner tubes. They make one-of-a-kind luxurious bags – you would never, ever imagine these were made from recycled inner tube,” said Julie Scroggins, vice president and CFO of Waukegan Tire.

Celebrities like Brett Michaels, Susan Sarandon and Carrie Ann Inaba use the bags, which come in a variety of styles ranging from credit card holders and purses to travel totes and messenger bags. Prices range from $24 to $400.

As an added customer incentive, Waukegan Tire has pledged 10% of the profits from purse sales to the local United Way.
