I’d Like to Thank the Academy….

I used to work in the ad business, and we tortured ourselves entering various annual advertising award programs.

 The secret, we found, was volume, volume, volume.

It wasn’t so much that we were playing the odds – the more entries, the better your chances, one would think – but rather we were paying the piper. The operators of the annual-hand-me-an-award awards, naturally, enjoyed income, and made sure to reward those who contributed mightily. More dollars means more trophies.

It comes as no shock to me, then, that an accidental e-mail revealed just what some of the big time ad agencies spend – of client’s money, no less – to take home a few trophies to polish their resumes.

The mighty OneShow, among the top three in the world, took in 9,795 entries for its 2009 awards, for a total of $3.51 million – and average of $358 per! Guess money must be tight, though, because 2008 saw 26,000 entries or an estimated $10 million in entry fees.

OneShow organizers were quick to discredit the e-mail, which emanated from their offices, calling it an “unfortunate mistake” and inaccurate. Sure. Whatever.
