Goodyear Names Highway Hero at Mid America Trucking Show

(Akron/Tire Review) Last night, at the Mid America Trucking Show in Louisville, Ky., Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. presented Ashford, Ala., truck driver Douglas Crawford with the 23rd Goodyear North America Highway Hero Award.

Crawford, who drives for Saia Motor Freight Lines Inc., saved the life of fellow truck driver Herman Langford of Leesburg, Ga. When a hit-and-run driver allegedly rear-ended a Roadway truck, the driver lost control and collided with Langford’s truck. Both tractors burst into flames, and Crawford pulled over to help.

Crawford sprayed his extinguisher on the flames and found Langford conscious but unable to move. He pulled the injured driver from the burning truck and placed him in a safe area in the ditch. Moments later, the tractor exploded.

Goodyear presented Crawford with a $10,000 U.S. Savings Bond and a Highway Hero ring.

For Babcox Media’s Joe Keene, an ASE-certified technician charged with fixing up a rare Lincoln Blackwood, it means heading back to Transtar Autobody Technologies in Detroit to put the finishing touches on the Blackwood. Then, he’ll put Babcox Media HQ in the rearview mirror as he heads out on the Lincoln Highway on his way to AAPEX. One of his first stops is the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Ind., where he hopes to bridge the connection between the automotive industry’s past and its future.
