As reported earlier this week by the Akron Beacon Journal, the city of Akron took another step to create historic landmarks in the city. Up for consideration are the former Firestone Tire & Rubber Co. buildings.
The buildings were approved by city council to receive historic designation, required for developers to receive state historic tax credits. The former Firestone properties at 1200 Firestone Parkway and 1301 S. Main St. are now a historic district.
Councilman Jeff Fusco, who is the chair of the planning committee, said, “It’s exciting to see this move forward.”
The Firestone buildings, with the guidance of Amerimar Realty Co., would be developed into a multiple-tenant complex for offices, labs and other uses.
The option to buy the former Firestone buildings is still on the table for Amerimar. It would have to pay Akron $5 million, which is the amount the city paid for the buildings. However, the city is allowing the developer time to attract new tenants.
