A 47-year-old Georgia woman was killed during morning rush hour April 26 when a tire/wheel assembly flew over a media wall on I-85 near Atlanta and struck her minivan.
The tire/wheel assembly came from a 1998 Dodge Ram 3500 traveling northbound, while the minivan was traveling in the opposite direction. Witnesses said the assembly vaulted the wall and bounced over several lanes of traffic before smashing into the roof of the minivan.
The woman was driving her 16-year-old daughter to school when the incident occurred. The teenager reportedly took the wheel and was able to bring the vehicle under control and stop on the berm.
Police are investigating how and why the tire/wheel assembly came off of the truck.
