FIA and its Formula 1 racing are reportedly putting the full-court press on to convince Bridgestone Corp. to remain as the series’ race tire supplier.
Since Bridgestone announced last year that the 2010 F1 season would be its last as the tire supplier, the series has struggled to find a replacement.
Rumors had wither Kumho or Hankook stepping into the series, but recent reports indicate neither is interested. Michelin, which quit the series after the 2006 season, was also rumored to return, but apparently the French tiremaker wants rule changes that would allow it to demonstrate a tire’s role in fuel saving and reduced CO2 emissions, reports said.
Bridgestone cited the need to cut costs when it stated its intent to leave the F1 series after its contract runs out. Since the end of the 2009 season, F1 rules were altered to cut the number of tires each team would receive for each race from 14 sets to 11, and FIA is also exploring other ways to help Bridgestone reduce its F1 costs, estimated at some $200 million annually.
