Discount Tire Offering Free Tire Checks to Drivers

(Akron/Tire Review) This summer, 600 Discount Tire stores will offer drivers free tire inspections to improve vehicle fuel efficiency and safety.

Drivers also receive a free air gauge and tread-depth card when they visit the store to have their tires checked.

Discount Tire is also offering customers the following five summer safety tips for improving gas mileage:

1. Maintain proper tire air pressure. Low tire pressure decreases fuel economy approximately two to three miles per gallon. Check air-pressure monthly and before long trips to ensure safety and to save money.

2. Check air pressure when tires are cool. Air pressure in a tire tends to increase in warm weather and decrease in cold weather. The pressure changes one pound for every 10º of temperature change.

3. Remove excess weight. The heavier a vehicle, the more energy it takes to move.  Excess weight can take an unnecessary toll on fuel economy and tire wear. An extra 100 pounds in your vehicle can reduce a vehicle’s miles per gallon (MPG) by up to 2%.

4. Rotate tires regularly. Tires should be rotated every 6,000 miles for optimal wear.

5. Maintain proper wheel alignment. Alignment is a key maintenance factor in getting the most wear and performance from vehicle tires.
