Chem-Trend Celebrates 50 Years

Chem-Trend, which provides products for the tire industry – as well as for segments of the polyurethane, die casting, rubber and rotational molding, and the composite and thermoplastic industries – is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month.

The company’s release agents and specialized ancillary products are used in the production of various molded products; including tires, plastic bottles, rubber o-ring seals, shoe soles, polyurethane automotive seat cushions and die cast engine blocks, to name just a few.

In the 1950s Chem-Trend’s founder, Peer Lorentzen, began to experiment with the development of release agents for polyurethane foams, using the kitchen of his Howell, Mi., home as a laboratory and production area.
Lorentzen, a young chemical engineer who had recently immigrated to the United States from Denmark, had observed the evolution of car seat cushion production within the automotive component industry, which was moving toward the use of molded polyurethane foam. The lack of specialized products necessitated the use of plain floor wax to separate the molded polyurethane cushions from the mold, an inefficient method that caused high scrap rates and downtime. His observations led to the development of new release agents that made polyurethane foam molding easier, more reliable and more cost efficient than before, according to Chem-Trend.

“Mr. Lorentzen continued to research, tweak and develop formulas for individual customers based upon their raw material and production variations, as well as specific part finish and manufacturing process requirements,” said Devanir Moraes, Chem-Trend president and CEO. “And this is the path we are still following today, with a focus on becoming directly involved with customers, learning their processes and providing them with release agent solutions that provide significantly greater value than their cost.”

Chem-Trend entered the tire market in 1992 and has since developed a full portfolio of release agent and ancillary products for the industry, including a full range of filled and unfilled inside tire paints, durable inside tire paints, water-based outside tire paints, tire mold coatings, tire repair paint and permanent bladder coatings, all in ready-to-use form.

Chem-Trend currently has manufacturing operations in North and South America, Europe and Asia, sales offices in 17 countries and distributors in more than 50 countries.
