BFGoodrich Plans Expansion

(Ft. Wayne Journal Gazette) BFGoodrich officials have applied for a property tax abatement on an equipment expansion costing at least $44 million that will create 60 jobs at the company’s tire manufacturing plant in Woodburn.

According to the abatement request filed with the Allen County Department of Planning Services, the company plans to add between $44.2 million and $52.7 million of manufacturing equipment and an additional $200,000 in information technology equipment. The abatement request also shows the company plans to add 60 jobs to the 1,380 on the payroll. Salaries for the new jobs range from $13 to $31.73 hourly, the paperwork showed.

The manufacturing plant in Woodburn is a key part of BFGoodrich’s manufacturing footprint, said Lynne Slovick, spokeswoman for Michelin North America, the company that owns the Woodburn plant.

The equipment would be phased in between now and 2010, the application showed.

Company officials are working with state and local officials on an incentive package, Slovick said. “We’re very appreciative of the support we receive in Fort Wayne and Allen County.”

The local plant manufactures replacement tires for passenger cars and light trucks.

“The longer people are keeping their cars, the more they will need replacement tires,” Slovick said in an e-mail Monday. (Tire Review/Akron)
