What’s Your Belts and Hoses IQ?

Every motor vehicle on the road has one or more belts, and dozens of different kinds of hoses (coolant, fuel, vacuum, power steering, brakes, windshield washers, etc.). Being familiar with these products allows you to get the correct replacement belts and hoses to match your customers’ needs.

Replacing Hubs Equipped With Wheel Speed Sensors

When engineers came up with the idea of putting the wheel speed sensor (WSS) and tone ring inside a sealed wheel bearing hub assembly, it sounded like a great idea. The sealed environment would help protect the sensor and make it less vulnerable to damage or contamination from the outside world. The first applications date

A look at the evolution and latest developments in headlamp technology

Wheel Bearing Basics

Wheel bearings can be of either ball or tapered roller type. Those used for front wheel bearing applications are an angular type, which will accept greater thrust loads than a Conrad-type bearing, which will accept a 100% load in the radial or thrust position and any combination of a 100% load. A tapered roller bearing will accept both a radial and a thrust load.

Keeping Engine Temps In Check

Keeping an engine cool is no easy task. Nearly a third of the heat released by combustion ends up as waste heat in the engine block and cylinder heads. All that heat has to go somewhere to prevent a meltdown, so coolant circulating through the block and heads soaks up the heat and carries it to the radiator where airflow absorbs the heat and carries it away.

Understanding Air Filter Fundamentals

Air filters remove dirt by trapping contaminants as the air flows through the filter media. The percentage of particles removed is a measure of the filter’s efficiency. A good quality air filter generally trap upwards of 98.5% of the incoming dirt.

Complete Strut Assemblies Offer Many Advantages

Quick and easy to install, complete strut assemblies have become a popular item with professional technicians.

Battery 411: Testing, Charging and Replacing a Battery

In recent years, the electronic content in vehicles has multiplied several times over. More electronics means more demand on the battery and charging system. A weak battery or low system voltage due to a charging problem can cause all kinds of havoc with the on-board electronics.

Mode $06 Diagnostics Offer Added Insight, More Information

What’s the one thing you always want to avoid when diagnosing and repairing driveability and emissions problems? Comebacks. Nothing is more frustrating than to "fix" a customer’s vehicle, and then have it come back a few days or weeks later with the check engine light on and displaying the same or a new fault code.

Brake And Bearing Basics

Today’s vehicles don’t require much maintenance. Spark plugs last 100,000 miles, long-life coolants can go five years or 150,000 miles, and some filters have no recommended replacement interval. But sooner or later, one thing all vehicles eventually require is brake work.

Selling Services: Wheel Bearings

Wheel bearings, which can be of either ball or tapered roller type, come in sets that consist of an inner and outer bearing. To ensure proper service, review the basics of this important vehicle component.

The Advantages of Twin-Tube Shocks

Twin-tube shocks and struts have been used as OE on most vehicles for many years, but in recent years we’ve seen more monotube shocks and struts being used as OE dampers on sports and performance vehicles. We Take a closer look at twin-tube shocks and struts to better understand how these ride control products evolved and how they work.
