“And Then Poppy Said to Burnham, ‘Well, You Are Certainly a Dandy, Now Aren’t You.’”

What is that saying about dressing for the job you want, not the job you have?

Probably didn’t serve Detroit’s Pitiful Three last week when they made the mistake of shopping Congress for handouts.

Seems flying corporate jets from Detroit to D.C. to beg for money is considered a bit ill-mannered, even for the Grosse Pointe crowd. Messrs. Waggoner, Mulally and Nardelli couldn’t even plane-pool over to Capitol Hill.

One carmaker spokesman said GM chief Wagoner and Ford boss Mulally are “required” to fly private aircraft for security reasons. Yeah, right. These guys are how much more important than any other CEO?

Funny, too, that in the days following the public flogging for frivolous spending, both GM and Ford announced plans to rid themselves of those pesky corporate jets. Guess that really wasn’t a rule, now was it?

Regardless of real or supposed rules, it just plain looked bad, and the three rightfully took a lot of heat.

But what was worse, according to lawmakers, was showing up begging for $25 billion WITH NO plan on how the public money would be used. Not even a PowerPoint was offered. Just “give us the money and we’ll take it from here.”

Little wonder public sentiment was to let them eat cake.

The Kings of Cars are due back on Capitol Hill next month when they are required to present actual business plans. Presumably they will be taking AmTrak.
