Peterbilt Recalls Trucks Due to Tire Issue

Peterbilt is voluntarily recalling more than 2,000 Class 8 trucks in the U.S. and Canada because they can travel at speeds greater than their tires can safely handle.

The manufacturer announced it will recall trucks from model years 2009-16 because they can go faster than 75 mph, while the maximum speed their 22.5-in. diameter Michelin XZA tires can handle is 65 mph. The trucks in question are used mainly for hauling automobiles.

“A premature tire failure may occur on the front or steer axle,” possibly resulting in a crash, Peterbilt stated in documents posted this week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

While the agency has no formal investigation under way and hasn’t requested further recalls, NHTSA is encouraging other truck manufacturers with “similar risks” to take action to address them.
