India-based JK Tyre has plans to increase its passenger car tire manufacturing capacity at its Mexico plant by 50% and begin manufacturing special applications, according to Business Standard.
Currently, JK Tyre’s Mexico plant has a capacity of 3.5 million tires, which the tiremaker plans to increase to 5 million tires a year, said Arun K Bajoria, president of JK Tyre’s industrial operations.
To meet the new capacity, the company will invest Rs 150 crore for expansion. JK Tyre has already invested $22 million in the plant, according to Business Standard.
The expansion project is expected to conclude at the end of 2015. Tires produced at the plant for special applications will include forklift, garden equipment and construction equipment tires.
The tiremaker has also been expanding its Chennai, India, plant. Once completed that plant’s capacity for bus truck radial tires will increase to 1.2 million a year from 400,000 and 4.5 million from 2.5 million for passenger car tires.
