Cap-italizing on Caps
If you’re in an area where streetrods are common (and who isn’t?), you may want to look at displaying a few derby-style caps for the 1960-70s rallye-type wheels. These were common on Cameros, Corvettes and other muscle cars of the period.
Usually priced around $16 to $30 each, these caps offer up to 50% gross profit and take up very little shelf space. One word of caution though: OE wheels use a different diameter cap than aftermarket, so be sure to check the wheel to determine the correct cap or at least test fit the caps you are selling first.
As an added upsell for these caps, check out the locks from Cap-Keepers. These patented locks can be applied in just minutes and provide some protection for these expensive caps. Before, a small flathead screwdriver could pop them off. With the Cap-Keepers, a cast aluminum ring is bolted to the cap, and several cables are attached to the lug studs.
Other great add-ons that can put the finishing touch on a beautiful wheel are officially licensed caps and spinners from American Racing (www.americanracing.com) to fit the Torque Thrust and Torque-Thrust II wheel lines. These beautifully crafted caps will certainly help your customers distinguish themselves at the next cruise. These caps aren’t cheap ®“ retailing for upwards of $250 to $350 per set ®“ but you make 20% to 30% profit. I think you’ll agree that this is good money when you were going to have to install the cap anyway.
American Racing offers other accessories, as well, including clothing, watches and steering wheels to match its Torque-Thrust and Hopster wheels, hitch covers and simulated off-road bead lock rings. T-shirts, for instance, can be purchased at 35% off suggested retail of $16.95 up to XL and $18 for XXL. A minimum quantity is required to receive the volume discount.
Another product that is catching on, especially in the 18-to-30-year-old market, is Tireflys. These are LED lights built into a valve-stem cap. A simple installation, and they’re ready to go. Once the vehicle is rolling, centrifugal force activates the lights. Each Tirefly comes complete with batteries, and is sealed in a punch card package that can be displayed on the counter or pegboard hanger. There are various colors available, including several that change between red, blue and green.
Don’t forget about basic tools, as well. Many times, OE lug wrenches don’t fit aftermarket lugs. A few collapsible four-way lug wrenches are an easy sell and will show customers that you are concerned with their safety.
Why stop there? Stock travel safety kits equipped with road flares, air pressure gauges, first-aid products and flashlights. These are impulse buys that can make a great gift any time of the year for your customers and offer extra profit potential for you.
Any of these products will appeal to most of your customers. Don’t let a customer walk out of your store and go down the street to spend money on something that you can easily provide.
