Del-Nat Recycling Program Holds Value in 2013

Del-Nat Tire Corp. reported it helped save the equivalent of 204 trees in 2013 through its recycling program of office and warehouse waste at its facility in South Memphis.

The company said it also saved 40 cubic yards of landfill space and 84,000 gallons of water last year, according to information provided in an annual sustainability report from Recycle Solutions. The sustainability report stated that Del-Nat recycled 12 tons of paper and one ton of plastic from Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2013.

Del-Nat’s recycling effort also saved the equivalent of 4,564 gallons of oil, 98 million BTUs of energy and 53,774 kilowatt hours of energy, the company added. Del-Nat also launched its “Tires for Trees” program in the spring of 2013. The program’s effort of collecting discarded tires from areas in Shelby County resulted in a donation of more than $800 to Memphis City Beautiful for the planting of trees.

Del-Nat began its recycling effort in 2009, when Recycle Solutions developed a long-term plan to assist in achieving close to zero-waste.

“Del-Nat is an excellent role model for Mid-South businesses,” said Mark Huber, operations manager at Recycle Solutions. “Without dedicating additional resources, they have improved our environment and saved valuable resources to improve stakeholder value. If more companies realized that making this change is feasible, it would have a significant impact on our natural resources locally.”
