Bridgestone Americas will no longer distribute its lines of passenger tires in the U.S. through ATD, the company said in a statement.
The company plans to continue to work with ATD to distribute commercial tires, as well as working with ATD’s Canadian subsidiary, National Tire Distributors.
“Bridgestone Americas (Bridgestone) is focused on giving consumers and the independent dealers that serve them more access to the full depth and breadth of our passenger and light truck product lines,” the tiremaker said in a statement. “Third-party distributors are an important part of Bridgestone’s consumer tire distribution strategy and we are committed to prioritizing distribution partners that prioritize our company’s products and brands. As such, we will end our affiliate and associate dealer programs with American Tire Distributors (ATD) in the U.S., effective July 31. ATD will continue with the Bridgestone consumer tire delivery program in the U.S. for a period of time to ensure a seamless transition for customers.
“This decision is limited only to passenger and light truck tire distribution in the U.S. Bridgestone will continue to work with ATD to distribute commercial truck tires, Ag tires and tubes in the U.S., as well as passenger and light truck tires in Canada through National Tire Distributors (NTD).”
The announcement comes after Bridgestone and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. announced they are forming a joint distribution partnership, called TireHub, which will provide U.S. tire dealers and retailers with passenger and light truck tires from the two companies. Just after the creation of TireHub was announced, Goodyear dropped ATD as one of its distributors.
An ATD spokesperson said in a statement regarding Bridgestone’s announcement that “we are disappointed by Bridgestone’s decision to no longer use ATD as a distributor of their products in the United States, which we believe limits consumer choice.”
“ATD remains the nation’s premier tire distributor as well as the largest independent supplier of tires to the replacement tire market. Importantly, ATD continues to generate substantial cash flows and as of May 31, 2018 had approximately $300 million of liquidity. We have a loyal base of customers and manufacturer partners with whom we are continuing to work as we always do,” the statement read. “Our value proposition continues to strengthen as we execute our strategy. Our industry is evolving and we are been bringing game-changing innovation – including digital tools, programs and technical support – that will make us the most connected and insight-driven automotive solutions provider in the industry.
“We have been and will continue to take steps to meaningfully offset the potential impact of Goodyear and Bridgestone’s actions. To us, it’s all about keeping the power of choice alive and we look forward to continuing to support our customers and manufacturer partners like no one else can.”
