Millwood, N.Y.-based Mavis Discount Tire faces federal charges that it discriminated against women in its hiring practices.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission filed a lawsuit claiming the dealership is violating the Civil Rights Act for refusing to hire female candidates for a variety of positions despite some applicants having better qualifications than the males hired for those jobs.
The suit claimed that of 1,300 people hired between 2008 and 2010 as tire installer, service technician, assistant manager and manager, not one was female.
The EEOC filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, and that action came after the agency attempted to conciliate the matter. The suit seeks to recover past and future wages for all female applicants harmed by Mavis’ actions, jobs with Mavis for those women wrongfully denied them, and injunctive relief.
Mavis Discount Tire also operates as Mavis Tire Supply Corp. and Mavis Tire NY, and also owns Cole Muffler Inc. In all, the company operates some 110 stores in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
