Compulsory tire labeling is scheduled to be introduced in South Korea in November 2012.

As a preparatory stage toward its implementation, on Nov. 14 the country introduced tire labeling on a voluntary basis.

Reporting the commencement of voluntary labeling by South Korea’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy, specialty chemicals firm Lanxess notes that the ministry views tire labeling as a major part of its overall plan toward a “greener society” and it expects nationwide energy savings of 350,000 tons of oil equivalent, and a greenhouse gas emission reduction of around one million tons of CO2 per year.

The label shows in a grading of five levels the tire’s fuel efficiency and the wet grip characteristics. It will first be applied to passenger car and light commercial vehicle tires and later to truck and bus tires. (Tyres & Accessories)
