Last week, Aeolus Tyre Co. officially became the first Chinese tiremaker to begin 100% environmentally friendly production of its tires.
Aeolus general manager Wang Feng and Alliance Tire Americas president Manny Cicero.
The Jiaozuo, China-based company has taken steps in its manufacturing process so that all tires produced from here on out are REACH-compliant. It also now offers medium truck/bus radial tires that boast longer tread life, greater retreadability and lower rolling resistance as much as 24% lower, according to Aeolus.
To celebrate the milestone, some 200 invited guests dealers, distributors, partners and select media joined Aeolus for its Greentyre Global Launch Event, held July 9 in Jiaozuo, Henan province.
The tiremaker said its new generation of fuel-saving tires is made without aromatic oils and with processes that create low levels of smoke, dust, noise and power consumption. This is achieved through low-temperature mixing, nitrogen curing, the use of pelletized carbon black and chemicals, the installation of a high efficiency dust arrester in the plant, and zero emission wastewater recycling at the facility, according to the company.
“There are no specific tire environmental protection laws or regulations in China,” Aeolus general manager Wang Feng told attendees. “Most domestic tire manufacturers have not promoted green tires in the Chinese market until now. Aeolus has chosen to bear the cost to produce green tires because of our values and our initiative to undertake social responsibility.”
The new medium truck/bus radial tires Aeolus Green Tires, or AGT offer decreased rolling resistance, the company claims. During testing, one AGT tire (size 315/80R22.5) resulted in a 24% drop in rolling resistance compared to the same size in a standard Aeolus tire. In fuel efficiency testing, the AGT tire showed a 7% decrease in fuel consumption compared to a standard Aeolus tire. The tiremaker added its AGT medium truck/bus radial tires can now be retreaded twice due to a new design with a stronger casing, cooler-running tread and four-ply belt construction, Aeolus claimed.
Present at the launch event were representatives from Alliance Tire Americas, the sole distributor of Aeolus commercial truck tires in the U.S. Alliance took over distribution as part of its purchase of GPX International Tire in December 2009.
“We expect and we have gotten consistently high quality products, reliable supply and very fair pricing in working with Aeolus these 19 months,” said Alliance Tire Americas President Manny Cicero. “And we are working together to invest in and build the Aeolus name in the U.S. We’re very excited about the new Greentyre initiative.”
On the heels of the green production and AGT announcements came another breakthrough: Aeolus will begin producing passenger car radials, an entirely new product segment in the tiremaker’s 46-year history. Though only in the trial production stage at this point in time, Aeolus has invested heavily in a new plant designated for manufacturing HP, UHP, winter and eco-friendly passenger tires, as well as LT and SUV products.
More information about Aeolus’ new green initiatives and Alliance’s strategy for the company’s presence in the U.S. will appear in a future issue of Tire Review.
